The Occupational Therapy Council (Australia & New Zealand) Ltd (OTC) is an independent not-for-profit organisation whose purpose is to ensure that standards of education, training and assessment of occupational therapists are maintained and developed so the Australian public is assured of safe and proper practice.

Internationally-qualified occupational therapists wanting to practise in Australia are required to undertake an assessment in compliance with the OTC requirements. This assessment comprises:

Stage 1 — Desktop assessment
Stage 2 — Supervised practice audit

Stage 1 — Desktop assessment

This initial stage is a document-based evaluation designed to assess whether your qualifications and experience meet the Australian standards for occupational therapy practice. Think of it as a thorough academic and professional portfolio review.

  • To determine if your overseas qualifications are comparable to an Australian Bachelor's or Master's degree in occupational therapy.
  • To evaluate your theoretical knowledge and understanding of occupational therapy principles.
  • To verify your professional experience and its relevance to Australian practice.

Stage 2 — Supervised practice audit

This stage is practical and focuses on evaluating your clinical skills and ability to apply your knowledge in an Australian healthcare setting. It's essentially a period of supervised practice.

  • To assess your clinical reasoning, communication, and professional conduct.
  • To familiarize you with the Australian healthcare system and ethical guidelines.

English Requirements : 

English language proficiency requirements

To meet the English language proficiency requirements you must achieve the required minimum scores in one of the following English language tests - IELTS Academic, PTE Academic or TOEFL iBT. Test results must have been obtained within the past two years from the date your Skill Assessment application is lodged.

Requirements:

• Successful completion of Stage 1.
• Limited registration with AHPRA.
• A supervision agreement approved by the OTC.
