Qualification assessment involves assessing the educational level comparability of your qualifications on the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) and determining the relevance of your qualifications for your nominated occupation. Employment assessment involves determining whether your work experience (obtained either in Australia or overseas) is at an appropriate skill level and relevant to your nominated occupation. 

A positive assessment of both qualifications and employment is required for a successful skills assessment for migration purposes.

2. Qualification:

• Group A: Generally requires a qualification assessed at the level of an Australian Bachelor degree or higher degree with a highly relevant field of study.
• Group B: Generally requires a qualification assessed at the level of an Australian Bachelor degree or higher degree. While a highly relevant field of study is often expected, some occupations in Group B might consider qualifications with a less direct relevance if coupled with significant highly relevant work experience.

3. Employment Experience:

• General Requirement for both Groups: You need to demonstrate paid employment experience at an appropriate skill level in your nominated occupation. The employment must be highly relevant to your qualification and the duties of the nominated occupation.
• Post-Qualification Employment (Crucial for both groups):
  • You generally need at least one year of post-qualification highly relevant employment at an appropriate skill level completed within the last five years. Employment before the qualification is usually NOT considered for meeting the minimum employment requirement for Group A. For some Group B occupations, pre-qualification employment might be considered under specific conditions (longer overall experience requirements).
• Duration of Employment: The total required duration of relevant employment can vary depending on the specific occupation and whether your qualification is considered highly relevant. Some Group B occupations might require more years of relevant experience (including potential pre-qualification experience).

4. Documentation:

• Evidence of Identity: Passport, birth certificate, etc.
• Qualification Evidence:
  • Award certificate (degree, diploma, etc.)
  • Academic transcript(s) detailing subjects/units and grades.
  • If the qualification is from overseas, VETASSESS will assess its comparability to the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).
• Employment Evidence:
  • Detailed Employer Statements (Statements of Service): On official company letterhead, signed by a supervisor or HR representative, stating:
    • Your full name
    • Exact start and end dates of employment
    • Position held and main duties performed (in detail)
    • Hours worked per week
    • Salary earned
    • Supervisor's name and contact details
  • Financial Evidence: Payslips (at least two per year claimed), official government tax records, bank statements showing salary credits, superannuation/provident fund statements.
  • Employment Contracts: If available.

Group D

VETASSESS Skills Assessment for Trade Occupations: A Summary

VETASSESS is an Australian Government-authorized skills assessment authority that assesses trade occupations for skilled migration to Australia. They evaluate if your skills and experience meet Australian standards for 27 different trade occupations.

There are two main pathways for skills assessment, depending on whether you hold an Australian qualification or occupational license:

Pathway 1: For applicants without an Australian qualification or occupational license.

• Eligibility:
  • Licensed Trades (e.g., Electrician, Plumber, Air-conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic):
    • 6 years of employment experience in the nominated occupation with no formal training.
    • 4 years of employment experience in the nominated occupation with relevant formal training.
  • Non-Licensed Trades (e.g., Cook, Chef, Motor Mechanic, Welder):
    • 5 years of employment experience in the nominated occupation with no formal training.
    • 3 years of employment experience in the nominated occupation with relevant formal training.
  • In both licensed and non-licensed trades, you must have worked in your nominated occupation for at least 12 months in the 3 years immediately before applying.
• Requirements:
  • Evidence of Identity: Passport bio page, birth certificate, and other secondary ID documents (driver's license, national ID, etc.). At least one photo ID and one document with full name and date of birth are required.
  • Employment Evidence:
    • Detailed employer statements on official letterhead, including exact employment dates, hours worked, job title, detailed duties, and supervisor contact information.
    • Financial evidence such as official government tax records, payslips (at least two per year claimed), superannuation documents, and bank statements showing salary deposits (at least two per year claimed).
    • If self-employed, provide business registration details, official statements from a registered accountant or legal team.
  • Qualification Evidence (if applicable): Award certificate and academic transcript.
  • Practical Assessment and/or Technical Interview: If your documentary evidence is satisfactory, you will be invited to a practical assessment at a VETASSESS center (in Australia, India, South Africa, or the UK for some occupations) and/or a technical interview.

  • Stage 1 (Documentary Evidence Assessment): AUD $450.00
  • Stage 2 (Technical Interview): AUD $1000.00

Pathway 2: For applicants who hold a relevant Australian qualification or a current Australian occupational license in their trade.

• Eligibility:
  • Hold a relevant Australian qualification (including a Statement of Results) OR a current Australian occupational license in your nominated trade. Accepted qualifications and licenses vary by occupation.
  • Have worked in paid employment in your occupation for at least 3 years full-time (or part-time equivalent) at the required skill level.
  • Have worked full-time in your occupation for 12 months in the last 3 years. For licensed trades with an Australian qualification, this employment must be in Australia. For Australian occupational license holders, the employment must be in Australia or New Zealand.
• Requirements:
  • Evidence of Identity: Same as Pathway 1.
  • Australian Qualification/License: A clear copy of your Australian qualification (including Statement of Results) or current Australian occupational license.
  • Employment Evidence: Similar to Pathway 1, including employer statements and financial evidence covering the required periods of employment.
• Technical Interview: If your documentary evidence meets the requirements, you will be invited to a technical interview.

• Nominated Occupation: You must choose the VETASSESS occupation that most closely matches your skills and experience. It's your responsibility to ensure this occupation is appropriate for your visa/sponsorship requirements.
• Assessment Process: VETASSESS assessors are trade professionals who understand your skills and qualifications. The assessment aims to determine if your skills meet Australian industry standards.
• Processing Time: Processing times can vary depending on the pathway and the complexity of your application. It's typically around 13 weeks. Ensure you provide all required documents to avoid delays.
