Speech Pathology Australia (the Association) is recognised as the national professional standards organisation for speech pathologists in Australia. The Association is also recognised by the Australian Government, Department of Home Affairs as the assessing authority for speech pathologists intending to apply for skilled migration to Australia.
Key Requirements and Eligibility:

Qualifications:
- Your speech pathology qualifications must be comparable to those of speech pathologists trained in Australia. This is assessed against the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).
- A minimum of a Bachelor's degree (AQF 7) is required.
- The qualification must be specific to speech pathology and include supervised clinical experience.

English Language Proficiency:
- SPA requires a "superior" level of English.
- This can be demonstrated through:
- Occupational English Test (OET): Specific band scores are required.
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic Test: Specific band scores are required.
- Exemptions: Applicants with an entry-level speech pathology qualification conducted in English from certain countries (UK, Canada, NZ, USA, Ireland) may be exempt. However, this is dependant on the individual application.

Recency of Practice:
- Applicants must demonstrate a minimum of 1000 hours of work experience as a speech pathologist within the past five years.

Competency Standards:
- Applicants must demonstrate competence against the Competency Based Occupational Standards for Speech Pathologists (CBOS).

Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA):
- If you hold certification from a signatory MRA association (e.g., ASHA, SAC, RCSLT), you may be eligible to apply under the MRA pathway.
