Criminals are targeting university students, both online and in-person, offering payments in exchange for receiving money into your bank account and transferring it elsewhere or to a cryptocurrency exchange.
These criminals recruit money mules, sometimes unknowingly, to transfer stolen funds, and participating in money muling is a serious criminal offense. Convictions can lead to 12 months to life in prison.
Stay safe and avoid the temptation:
STOP – Take a moment to reflect: Is the offer too good to be true? Be on guard!
CHECK – Research the opportunity thoroughly before signing up. Verify the legitimacy of the employer or company.
REJECT – Don't engage with suspicious online posts or accept requests from people you don’t know. Never share bank or personal details with strangers.
ACCEPT – Stick to reputable job sites and registered businesses.
Report money muling to the police at www.cyber.gov.au.
